First Aid Class at the Lumina Community Center

In addition to Bible education, we also offer a creative afternoon at the Lumina community center. During this afternoon, all kinds of hands-on activities are organized. Through these activities, the children learn to listen carefully to instructions, work together, wait patiently for their turn, and communicate respectfully when they have a question. This time, we’re taking a look at the first aid class at the Lumina Community Center.

Surprisingly, basic rules such as working together, being patient, and listening pose a major challenge for many children. Unfortunately, the ideal scenario doesn’t apply here; often, there are poorly trained teachers and large classes filled with children facing various challenges. This is not the kind of foundational education one would hope for. That’s why at Lumina, we pay extra attention to these skills, which are crucial for their future.

During this creative afternoon, the children learn, among other things, how to bake cookies, make a healthy fruit salad, and eat with a knife and fork. They’ll also learn how to use a sewing machine, mend a hole in their pants, and sew on a button. This week’s program included a first-aid lesson, and Tania’s experience as a nurse came in very handy.

The lesson began with a review: Do the children know their address? And who should they call in case of an emergency? What information do they need to have on hand? After going over this theoretical knowledge, it was time to put it into practice.

All the children were given a practice bandage. After Tania explained how to use it properly and what to avoid at all costs, the children got to work. In pairs, they practiced applying the bandage on each other. How do you bandage a wrist? Or your foot? Or your head?

The kids loved it! It was quite an experience. Many of them had never held a bandage before or thought about what to do in an emergency.

It was a great afternoon!
