New to the program: homework help

At the Lumina community centers, we recently started offering homework assistance. We noticed that a large number of the children were falling behind in school, so we decided to add this to the program. Every day, there is a time when the children can come in to do their homework with guidance.

Education

Unfortunately, we see many undereducated children. The quality of education in public schools leaves much to be desired; classes are often large, and most children have their own individual problems. There are many unqualified teachers who also face significant obstacles in exercising authority. The system encourages giving high grades as a reward, just to ensure that the children move on to the next grade.

All of this leads to learning deficits. We see 11-year-olds who struggle with basic skills such as writing, reading, and simple math problems.

Homework Help

For this reason, we have decided to add homework help to our program. Before the daily program begins, the children arrive an hour early to do their homework.

Once they’ve finished their homework—or if they don’t have any—we give them extra work to do.

To our surprise, the children are discovering that doing homework can actually be fun! They enjoy doing the extra work we assign them.

Fun

It’s inspiring to see how well the children perform in a pleasant, calm, and safe environment. At home, they often don’t have a space of their own, and there’s a lot of turmoil and negativity.

We are grateful that we can contribute even more to the education of these enthusiastic children in this way and help them develop their skills.
